In 1985 John Nielsen was at the Le Mans 24 Hours for the first time, but he never made the start. During qualification thursday night he took off with his Sauber at more than 200 mph at the Mulsanne straight. The car and John Nielsen rotated several times in the air before it hit the ground 312 meters further down the straight. The car was a writeoff and the team had to withdraw from the race, but as in a miracle John Nielsen was not seriously hurt.
